Trained as a biologist I got a lifelong fascination for the life sciences and its transforming impact on society and our personal lives. As a researcher in the field of ‘science & technology studies’ I was involved in a variety of projects, focusing on developments in biotechnology and genetics and its wider societal ramifications. More and more I tried to combine in this work an academic interest with a more engaging policy-oriented approach. The last eight years of my professional career I worked at the Dutch Rathenau Instituut. With the aim to support public debate and parliamentary policy making about new science and technology, I contributed to a wide-ranging programme of technology assessment. Since my retirement I continue my pursuits in this field as an independent researcher biotechnology & society with a strong interest in responsible research and innovation.
